Water for Kenya VR – A 3D film project for virtual reality headsets that makes climate change, sustainability, and development aid experientially accessible.

Water for Kenya VR is an interactive 360°-3D film project for virtual reality headsets that makes climate change, sustainability, and development aid playfully accessible.

In cooperation with the volunteer organization Water for Kenya e.V., a series of stereoscopic 360° recordings were made in one of the driest regions of Kenya. Various water aid projects are showcased, along with numerous insights into the way of life and everyday problems under massive water scarcity.

The primary target group is high school students in geography classes. To this end, a teaching concept has been developed that combines the use of virtual reality with other teaching methods, providing an extraordinary experience for the students. The design prioritized offering suitable interaction opportunities for first-time VR users, which enhance immersion through individual choices and ultimately increase interest in the topic. Thus, an on-site experience integrates into a playful knowledge transmission concept that encourages reflection and discussion. The application has been available free of charge since January 2019.

Meanwhile, the application is also being expanded both in content and quantity: Due to the excellent feedback, new recordings have already been made on-site.

The lessons in Kenya were more experiential than ever before.

Multiple headsets could be used at the same time.

Students were able to immerse themselves in another world with the help of the VR glasses.
