Dig it!

A fortress visit with AR accompaniment

Dig it! - The virtual fortress visit

Dig it! is a completely new type of AR application with an innovative concept that has not yet been implemented in the museum context. Players experience a 360° journey through the history of the Marienberg Fortress in Würzburg.

The project team from Playersjourney consisted of 2 developers, the project management, and a freelancer for the illustration and animation of the content. The client provided up to three employees for the processing of the content.

The narration was closely linked with the game design: Players can recreate various points in the fortress's history at multiple stations. The 360° recordings made on site provide the basis to bring the life, architecture, and diverse anecdotes of the numerous characters into the here and now. To remain as historically accurate as possible, the narration, including animation and illustration, was developed together with experts from the Museum of Franconia as well as external historians. The abstract, lovingly elaborated, and hand-drawn style offers enough abstraction to leave room for interpretation in cases of historically unclear facts and invites exploration.

While background texts about the scenes provide depth of content and factual knowledge, specially recorded voiceovers of the dialogues ensure low-threshold accessibility to information. The stations are narratively connected through local reference and game mechanics, forming a narrative framework. Fortress visitors can explore the experience in individual order and without a fixed starting point.

Hand-drawn illustrations & animations

Real exhibits are hidden in the scenes and can be collected.
