A virtual festival
Deutschland Express
Playersjourney worked for the Goethe-Institut on the idea, concept, and implementation of the project “Deutschland-Express.”
For this purpose, a virtual train was created as a place for encounters and events, where people from all over the world could board, exchange ideas, and learn about the Goethe-Institut and Germany. The project was realized using Mozilla Hubs, a platform that allowed many different, even less performant devices to be integrated, uniting a large number of participants in a virtual environment and freely adapting the environments to the purpose. Numerous virtual rooms were created in the form of “wagons,” which were unlocked during the associated opening events and remained open afterwards. The virtual train “Deutschland-Express” was on the move for six weeks – in the form of an online festival. The program's focus drew thematic connections between various German and international cities and places to enable a profitable exchange between people.
Themes included language, culture, sustainability, education, economy, and science. Even an art exhibition took place on the train, where artists could virtually engage in conversation with the visitors.
Access to the digital program was possible via mobile phone, tablet, or laptop, and even through VR. The team compiled the most interesting digital formats that the accelerated digitization during the coronavirus pandemic has produced: exhibitions in a 3D environment, concerts by avatars, a ZOOM piano session, Insta cooking shows, 360-degree videos, online workshops, and much more.
The festival took place as part of the Germany Year of the Goethe-Institut and attracted numerous interested parties for an interactive intercultural exchange.
